Nothing good ever got created by guys who sit around only toying with ideas all day. You need to try things out, test your ideas and feed these tests back into your development process. It is easier than ever before to do this, with mobile phone cameras, cheap and nasty as they are; you can still get a sense of an idea. I want to make something in a supermarket. If I sit around all day thinking about it, I realize that without lots of money and a proper production schedule, coming out of a solid script and signed off project then I'll never be able to get into a supermarket to film.

Why do I want to film in a supermarket? Is the idea rock solid?.....

This kind of thinking can often hinder, cripple and paralyze creative instinct.

The instinct - I think it'd be a cool look and feel, and more than slightly surreal to have a camera on a trolley late at night gliding around a supermarket. I don't know or care what, for who, why or how.

The correct course of action - try it out! even with a scrappy mobile phone, you can quickly start to produce digital sketches which will help guide your thinking.

These guys are the new kids on the block in Soho. They specialize in providing a mixed, creative digital and physical effects solution, and are linked in under the same roof as The Look London, and Williams Editors

All in all they're an idiosyncratic bunch of creatives, operators, digital craftsmen and raw talent, all lumped together in a crazy creative space slap bang in the center of Soho. These guys are definitely the ones to watch over the next year as they start working together to produce some great work.

This is a Great Example of somebody using what is widely regarded as a sub-standard doodle package to produce a masterpiece. No CS3 CD's scattered next to this dude's computer, instead he is using the tools available to sculpt his ideas in the digital medium. You don't need the latest versions or indeed to have the operating manual inscribed inside the front of your skull: - patience, a measured approach, a good idea and perseverance are the real tools that you need to master, everything else should flow from these. When learning software, try to learn it's paradigm, its methods and the concepts within which it moves. This approach will teach you a transferable skill set; eg "Compositing", or "Motion Graphics", as opposed to "Shake" or "After Effects".

Usually, when I spend time banging on about interactive video, I end up talking about "Traditional Methods", and "Digital Methods". Basically I am trying to draw a distinction between the tried and tested ways of doing things, particularly in terms of Television Commercial Production, and the new, open playing field of the Digital World. What I am NOT doing is trashing everything that has come before. It is the mistake of the pretentious Digital Designer to say "We don't need to know about that - we'll do it our way...".

Yes, we are finding our own way, but this should only be building on tried and tested ideas which have worked up to now. Just because you know how to use Final Cut Pro, you are not suddenly an Editor. Watch this movie about the history of Editing and think about the product of an amazingly refined craft, the next time you see a cut you see onscreen.

Well, iVideo. That would be interactive Video, not "i", as in iPod, iPhone, iPub, iPorn (except in the case of truly interactive Porn, the webcam based stuff with the real live girl at the other end), or any other Bandwagon usage of the lowercase "i". Yes, we all know that Fads Suck, but they only arrive because something of interest captures the imaginations of a large number of people. This Blog is going to be an accompaniment to my run of Dareschool talks, and hopefully will continue to be a place where I can post useless crap relating to interactive, innovation, interweb, space and time.
